As part of the Constellation program unfolding throughout Centre Pompidou’s renovation period, the H’ART Museum –formerly known as the Hermitage– in Amsterdam is one of the new partners with whom Centre Pompidou has signed a multi-year agreement. This collaboration will feature five major exhibitions, each developed around the excellence and masterpieces of the Musée National d’Art Moderne collection.

Chez Matisse
Masterpieces of Centre Pompidou

Drawing on a selection of major works from the Centre Pompidou collection, "Chez Matisse" (At Home with Matisse) retraces the career of Henri Matisse (1868–1954), one of the defining figures of modern art and a truly multidisciplinary artist, from his first self-portrait in 1900 to his final paintings and cut-outs. At the same time, the exhibition explores his lasting influence on artists of both the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
The exhibition reveals an ongoing dialogue that has continually been renewed across generations. It examines, for example, Matisse’s radically innovative conception of colour and his critical redefinition of the painting as a purely pictorial surface, which profoundly shaped the work of avant-garde artists in Germany and Russia. It also considers his approach to the decorative, the role of the model, and representations of the feminine in the work of women artists such as Sonia Delaunay, Natalia Goncharova, Baya, Anna-Eva Bergman, and Zoulikha Bouabdellah.
H’ART Museum, formerly the Hermitage Amsterdam, opened its doors in 2009 through a unique partnership with the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. In response to the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the museum cut ties with Russia and reemerged with a new identity and global mission.
Today, H’ART Museum brings iconic artworks and compelling stories from around the world to Amsterdam, in collaboration with renowned institutions like Centre Pompidou (Paris), the British Museum (London), and the Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington, D.C.).
Housed in a historic landmark in the city’s cultural heart, the museum features a tranquil courtyard garden and a lively Grand Café. More than just exhibitions, H’ART is a vibrant cultural hub, offering concerts, lectures, film nights, and educational programs for all ages.
