Where does a cry come from? How far can a cry travel? How is the body distorted under the effects of a cry? A cry is the sound most immediately connected to our deep and innermost emotions.
It is both intimate and visceral, but also extravagantly expressive, making it almost impertinent, mouth wide open. A combination of the French verbs hurler (to shout), the paroxysm of a cry, and hululer (to hoot or to howl), which refers specifically to nocturnal animals, Hurlula proposes an intimate peregrination, ecstatic and lunar, into the depths of the human body. For the choreography, Flora Détraz drew inspiration from expressionist portraits by painters such as Edward Munch, Francis Bacon and Marlene Dumas, and the dreamlike nature of experimental cinema by filmmakers such as Jean Cocteau, Luis Buñuel, Maya Deren and David Lynch. The result is a choreographic and musical investigation of the voice and body that focuses on the articulation between the visible and the invisible, the interior and the exterior. Flora Détraz studies different types of cry in a range of contexts, creating a catalogue of cries and what they evoke.
At the frontier between dance, music and cinema, Hurlula is a two-part project composed of a film about a woman-oracle who experiences prophetic hallucinations and a performance in the form of a three-person choreographed concert.
