Established by the magazine Film Culture in 1959, the Independent Film Award recognised the advent of a new generation of film-makers and reaffirmed the necessity of helping and supporting the emergence of a new cinema in the United States. For ten years the award of this prize reflected the preoccupations and debates that shaped the magazine, thus establishing the character of a critic open to the different areas of creative work in film, art and literature.
