Based on a tradition that dictates that lamentation is, by principle, a women’s affair and an expression of both individual and collective emotion, Mourn Baby Mourn is a choreographic and sound composition that is counterintuitively lively and exhilarating, functioning as an intimate manifesto on the question of mourning.
The background is an everyday state that resembles a sort of sadness and frustration that is so deep that the choreographer no longer knows where it came from or if it really belongs to her. She draws inspiration from gestures combining strength and boredom, a strange mix that she often finds in popular culture.
With Mourn Baby Mourn, Katerina Andreou, haunted by our lost futures, sends out a distress signal, an attempt to break free from melancholy by running headlong into breakdown, against the wall, which becomes the rallying cry to share with us all her strength, decibels and doubts. She choreographs a space infused with a temporal disjunction, a strange dialogue between the archaic and the contemporary, shifting from a lost past to a lost future.
