Painter, filmmaker, writer, gay rights activist, pioneer of queer culture and gardener: Derek Jarman’s work exists in many forms and perspectives, demonstrating considerable erudition and constantly renewed vitality. His films are part of a continuum of thought, life and creation, created during the conservative Thatcher years, as flamboyant objects that confront aesthetic questions and social issues, charged with a political force that remains intact.

Centre Pompidou is offering a retrospective of his remastered feature films and several of his Super 8 shorts, showing the diversity of his touch, from fiction to personal, diaristic and experimental forms. Alongside, Actes Sud publishing house is releasing the French translation of one of Derek Jarman’s diaries, Modern Nature. Given that the artist was a key figure in the English avant-garde and underground scene and took a highly collective approach to his work, surrounded by friends and long-term collaborators, it is only fitting that this retrospective seeks to be polyphonic, filled with the words of his entourage, such as Tilda Swinton, witnesses and inheritors, who will be present at many of the screenings.
