The Latvian National Museum of Art in Riga presents a selection of works from the Graphic Art Office of Centre Pompidou. These contemporary drawings come from the generous gifts and donations of collectors Florence and Daniel Guerlain. The exhibition presents internationally renowned artists, most of which have never been shown in the Baltic states. As a counterpoint, the Latvian National Museum of Art is devoting an exhibition to the development of Latvian visual art since the 18^th century.

The exhibition offers an extraordinary overview of the international artistic scene, with drawings by artists such as Robert Longo, Kiki Smith, Marlene Dumas and Giuseppe Penone, and French artists such as Henri Cueco, Dove Allouche and Anne Marie Schneider.

The selection of nearly 100 works on paper highlight a diversity of approaches, techniques and formats characteristic of the contemporary practice of drawing. It shows a “shift” towards abstraction, building on themes featured by Latvian artists such as landscapes, maps, silhouettes and more.

The exceptional donation of Florence and Daniel Guerlain represents a significant section of contemporary creation within the graphic art collection. After building an initial collection of different types of art objects, they devoted themselves exclusively to works on paper. In 2006, they created the Contemporary Drawing Prize and gave works by the winner to Centre Pompidou after each edition. In 2012, they made a donation of nearly 1,200 works, changing the face of the collection of works on paper at the Centre’s Graphic Art Office.

This uncommonly rich collection has been the subject of multiple international loans and exhibitions: in Sweden in 2015, Denmark in 2016, Spain in 2017 and Austria in 2019. In 2017, an exhibition titled “Ten Years of the Daniel and Florence Guerlain Contemporary Drawing Prize” was held at Centre Pompidou to celebrate the couple’s contribution to contemporary creation.
