Colloque
1926 - 1928
The decorative idiom of Colloque [Symposium] places it in the same vein as Monstres [Monsters], in the colourful style that Picabia was in the process of leaving in order to make his first Transparencies.
Like the representation of a reclining female silhouette, the line-drawn figures date from the period of works made in 1924. The artist juxtaposed a sailor figure with doubled eyes in a pastiche of a child's drawing, alongside a head of Christ tram a Catalan Roman fresco copied from a guide to the collections of the Ciudadela Museum in Barcelona. The vocabulary of dots, chevrons, diamonds, rectangles and serpentine forms completes this astonishing composition of juxtaposed styles.
