The works of Julie Mehretu constitute, in her own words, "narrative maps of places that don't exist".
Mehretu is known for her large-format paintings with complex and stratified surfaces in which architectural plans, diagrams, maps and graphic elements of a geometric nature intertwine. The artist's personal history- born in Ethiopia, studied in the United States and Senegal before settling in New York - is evident in her work. These five drawings are all particularly revelatory of a lived space constructed from memories.
