Sergej Jensen has a very distinctive take on painting. He doesn’t paint on the canvas but dyes or bleaches it, and sews, embroiders or glues pieces of found fabric onto the surface. This “poor” painting alludes not only to the American abstract painting of the 1950s but to the burnt and holed canvases of Alberto Burri or Blinky Palermo’s fabric works. With its two pieces of material set like eyes and the long, horizontal, scar-like line of sewing, this untitled work suggests a mask, a motif favoured by many 20th-century painters.
