Shapes and colours now move away from their descriptive function and begin to translate rhythms and tempos.
ln his essay Concerning the Spiritual in Art ( 1912), Wassily Kandinsky described six of his paintings from 1911 as "Impressions". Still inspired by "outside nature", they allow a glimpse of some concrete elements, such as these two knights and their mounts reduced to mere black lines, superimposed on a monumental red triangle endowed with symbolic meaning. This work was exhibited by the artist at the Paris Salon des Indépendants in the year it was created.
