Friedrich Kunath, born in 1974 in former East Germany, now lives and works in Los Angeles. In his work, he confronts German tradition – Dürer, the Romantic painters, Caspar David Friedrich and Sigmar Polke as well – with Californian vernacular culture, the world of Walt Disney being a highly significant example. This work consists of a painting linked to a motor, which makes it turn upon itself. Two apocalyptic head-to-tail landscapes are linked by a no less apocalyptic inscription: You know we can’t go back. This radical work, marked by a mix of humour with the idea of the end of the world, is typical of this unclassifiable artist.
