Design stage | With hand-made contact mics and photocells connected to a telescope (made in collaboration with Bob Bielecki), Vitiello was able to pick up the sounds on the other side of the sealed 3-inch pane windows of his studio at the 91st floor. Aural material included passing planes, helicopters, storm clouds and traffic, as well as the building itself swaying ominously. The 1999 studio exhibition featured pre-recorded sounds that were played back in the studio. In subsequent exhibitions, a large-scale photograph is also exhibited in an otherwise darkened gallery. Audio is mixed to 5.1 surround sound. After the fall of the towers in 2001, this piece obviously accrued more melancholic meaning as a memorial to the fallen towers, having perhaps even overshadowed the work’s original intention. Through sound, Vitiello now carries added responsibility for the memory of that lost space. www.stephenvitiello.com/pdf/catalogueessaybyregineasha.pdf | |
