Tamile über der Stadt (Penthouse)
(Tamouls à travers la ville)
1979
The city of Berlin is very present in the work of German artist Karl-Horst Hödicke, thought of as one of the pioneers of the Neue Wilde movement of the early 1980s. Like its other members he developed a forceful and graphic style of painting, which he used to capture the spontaneous life of the city and its inhabitants. In this rough-hewn and colourful canvas, one can see the influence of early-20th-century German Expressionism, which took modern life as a central theme of art, in the treatment of the three figures, seemingly sketched from life in their everyday hedonism, and the urban scene around them, rendered in bold, broad strokes.
