2011
Farah Atassi’s painting proceeds from an ambitious synthesis that draws on influences as diverse as Piet Mondrian, Kazimir Malevich and Fernand Léger. In Workshop, a tiled interior houses an industrial landscape of models of factories in the same colours as the décor. The composition evokes the Modernist grid and the geometry and chromatics of Mondrian, while also evincing an interest in the modern ruin and its poetics. The canvas is animated by a tension between the flatness suggested by its orthogonal composition and the perspectival representation of space.
