Sowden's research for patterns was both aesthetic and political, in opposition to the modernist doxa which recommended the eradication of ornamentation.

Under the Memphis banner, George Sowden had an opportunity to materialise many furniture drawings and to develop his work on motifs, used for textiles as well as "surface decoration" on many objects. His compositions for carpets blend geometric and organic elements. While it explores repeating patterns, this Drawing for a carpet also includes a more organised and constructed architectural dimension.
