French-born Chris Marker, whose real name was Christian-François Bouche Villeneuve, was a prolific, complex personality in the realm of the arts, cinema and literature. He was a film director, writer, philosopher, critic, photographer and producer all at once, whose work cast a curious, discerning and ironic eye on the trials and tribulations of world history, and the change in lifestyles of individuals in society. La Jetée [The Jetty] is a film about time and memory composed almost exclusively of black and white photographic images illustrating a science fiction story recounted in voice-over. Against the background of a nuclear disaster, the protagonist, held prisoner by experimental scientists, is sent along the axis of time to the past and the future, seeking the means that will enable him to survive.
