At first sight, the paintings of Norwegian artist Fredrik Vaerslev seem to imitate Terrazzo floors, a reference to traditional Italian slab flooring. However, his works are entirely produced with industrial spray paints and with a range of products found in a car garage: anti rust paint, tar, liquid asphalt, fixatives and white spirit. The artist works his compositions “all over” without a beginning, a middle or an end. Using glass paper, he attenuates certain effects; once the work is completed, he leaves it to mature out door, in the nature, like the Norwegian expressionist painter Edvard Munch (1863-1944). The interaction between chemicals and the elements gives his work, in which chance plays a key role, its final appearance.
