Bella au col blanc
1917
The writer, Bella Rosenfeld, represented here as a giant would remain Chagall's muse throughout his life.
Returning to the tiered construction of celestial and earthly registers used in religious painting, Marc Chagall gave his wife the features of a monumental madonna looking down on a tiny world where we can distinguish the artist and Ida, their daughter. Bella's sculptural silhouette contrasts with the still Cubist treatment of the sky and the forest. The economy of colours, the enormity of this almost heraldic figure and the rejection of depth add to the sacred impression emanating from this amorous hymn.
