These photographs document a performance in which Huang Yong Ping uses the I Ching [The Book of Changes], a treatise based on the divinatory practices of ancient China.
"Strike the East with the West, strike the West with the East": this is the artist' s motto, which has accompanied him since the mid-1980s. Beyond his critical irony with regard to the transcultural, Huang Yang Ping refers to a several-thousand-year-old spiritual and philosophical tradition to reinvent the terms of a conceptual art. Here he focuses on change as a structural element of the cosmos, which he compares with creation and the fate of the work, art and the artist.
