Le Ballet mécanique [version Moritz]
1923 - 1924
In the early 1920s, Fernand Léger came to have doubts about painting and turned to film and the moving image. There are recurrent preoccupations, however, that appear. Ballet mécanique has no scenario, no narrative logic, rapid cutting being used to bring about the collision of different points of view and different objects, the image being further dislocated by the close-ups on fragments and details and the use of mattes and prisms to produce kaleidoscopic effects. In both film and paintings one thus finds uncontrollable and abstract mechanical rhythms animating both objects and figures.
