La forêt pétrifiée
[1929]
This large rubbing was made by Ernst on the back of a 19th-century interpretative engraving and was displayed in Galerie Jeanne Bucher in the same year, 1929.
The work, which was part of the Parisian gallery's collection, may have been bought by Kurt Herberts, a collector from Wuppertal who owned a chemicals factory and had the work in his possession in 1946. lt was transferred to France by the third convoy in October 1948 and was entrusted to the Musée National d'Art Moderne by the fifth Artistic Recovery Commission in October 1950.
