Jean-Marc Bustamante explores photography, sculpture and painting, investigating their inter- permeability. Aperture I is one of a series of nine large photographic prints created from scans of felt-tip drawings on graph paper. The abstract scribble-like brown form on its yellowed background is framed by a blue line that recalls the camera viewfinder and the rectangles of the contact sheet. Drawing has a special place in Bustamante’s work, for he always begins with a sketch in elaborating his artistic projects. Here an uncertain line, spontaneous yet characterless, is transformed into a painting.
