"We were seeking a way to use emptiness and free ourselves from the compact mass." (Pevsner)
Contemporaneous with Antoine Pevsner's definitive move to Paris, this mask is a remarkable testimony to his assemblages inspired by analytical Cubism and consisting of innovative materials. Resulting from the artist's research into faces, this sculpture without a pedestal also manifests the influence of African masks. The translucent celluloid planes, often lined with sheets of zinc, multiply the optical and conceptual properties of this work.
