This photography forms part of a series in which Sedira focuses on a maritime cemetery, extending her thoughts on the notions of memory and transmission.


Zineb Sedira captures the ghostly presence of un-dismantled ships abandoned off the Mauritanian coast. Allegorically, she summons up the fate of migrants in the Mediterranean, the decline of maritime trade in the region, and water pollution. By photographing these ill-fated monuments, she underlines the deliberate ignorance of public authorities in regards to major contemporary issues such as displaced populations and damaged ecology.
