Achrome

"The picture cannot stand for what it evokes, explains or expresses: it WILL STAND only because it is: being." (Manzoni)
Achrome is part of a similar series of relief-paintings that evolved from 1957 onwards through the use of varied materials and textures. The absence of colours underscored by the title relates to the choice of white, whose neutrality excludes the expressive connotations of colour. By the rejection of ail "subjective conditioning'', the artist leaves a free range for a stripped back surface that asserts its presence as space and light.
