The Watchers - Upper Burma
(Les Veilleurs - Haute-Birmanie)
1921
While the Impressionists had a significant influence on the first works of Ernest Procter, the Twenties saw a development in his pictorial and decorative style. In 1919 he was invited by Lim Chin Tsong to decorate the Kokine Palace in Burma. The discovery of the oriental art of interior decoration had an impact on Procter’s later work, including this picture. It captures the eyes of a crowd gazing towards the same point, and makes play with the mise en abyme of the viewer’s gaze.
