A powerful spiritualist current spread through Czech countries during the first third of the 20th century.
It took root in Moravia, Bohemia and Silesia, regions of heavy industry and mining. During the long winters, a population without work gave itself up to spiritualism. The movement nevertheless experienced different waves of persecution: by the Catholic church in the 1920s, during the Nazi takeover in 1938, and during the Communist regime in 1948. Mediumistic drawings were then hidden in families, which enabled them to be preserved. Associated with naive art, this was the only way Anna Zemánkovâ could be exhibited.
