Between the 16th and 19th centuries, many artists in search of the unknown took part in major expeditions that contributed to our understanding of the world. Accounts of these explorations are part of what constitutes the stories of humanity. Today, artists continue their quest in order to experiment with new ways of understanding our past, current and future existence. Explorers of their own time, they become inventors and cartographers of physical or mental territories in turn.
The exhibition presents modern and contemporary art works by national and international artists. Alexander Calder, Maya Deren, Len Lye, Robert Smithson, Laurent Grasso, Kenji Yanobé, Sebastián Díaz Morales, David Renaud, Neal Beggs, Gloria Friedmann, Iván Argote, Boris Orlov, Juliette Agnel, Marwan Rechmaoui and more… Their works will immerse you in a new artistic experience.
This exhibition is part of a partnership between the City of Auxerre and the Centre Pompidou at Saint-Germain Abbey, a treasure of the city’s heritage and now the Cité de la Parole et du Son. Since 2022, three exhibitions have been presented at Saint-Germain Abbey: “The Centre Pompidou invited to Saint-Germain Abbey” from 18 June to 31 December 2022, “Echoes, a journey through sound at Saint-Germain Abbey” from 20 June to 31 December 2023 and “Botany of the Imaginary” from 15 June to 3 November 2024.
