After training, like many artists of his génération, at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), where he studied under conceptual artist John Baldessari, James Welling has since the 1970s developed a truly experimental body of work that examines photography at a time of profound transformation. Accustomed to employing a variety of processes and techniques (photogram, Polaroid, gelatin silver print, digital and pin-hole photography, crumpling, folding…) he explores every kind of possibility to produce images – representational or abstract – that engage with the history of art. James Welling is today the head of the photography department at UCLA.
