Carré noir
[1923 - 1930]
For Malevich, the square became the primary unit of a new pictorial system that freed painting from its figurative burden.
The black square motif appears in Kazimir Malevich's work for the first time in 1913, with his decors and costumes for Mikhail Matyushin's Cubist-Futurist opera La Victoire sur le soleil. For the artist, the idea was to create an absolute sign, the translation of an infinite cosmic space, a "zero of form". Here the artist returns to the iconic motif of the black square, siightly off-centre on a white background, producing an effect of depth.
