Grau (349) is a reflective work that testifies both to the artist's difficulty in painting and to his faith in the medium.
Begun in 1967, the Graue Bilder series resurfaced sporadically throughout Gerhard Richter's career. Grau (349) [Grey (349)] was painted using semi-automatic processes and bears the traces of rollers, sponges and drops of paint that distinguish it from the 130 other grey monochromes. "Neither visible nor invisible", grey contrasts its non-colour and melancholy with the mystical character of Yves Klein's blue. Like an opaque screen, this painting embodies a desire to "represent nothing at all" if not itself.
