If the title did not indicate the place -Chinon, which is famous for its vineyards it would be hard to tell where this flat, banal landscape is located. The painting's classical appearance is tempered by the pictorial treatment: the shaded-off contours may evoke a blurry photograph, creating a distancing effect. Gerhard Richter's landscapes raise the issue of representation and challenge our relationship to reality, which we "transfigure" by looking at it and turning it into an image.
