At the age of nearly 80, Henri Matisse had never varied his techniques and media so much. The exhibition presents 180 works of unprecedented freshness and vitality from the rich collection of the Centre Pompidou, private collections and national and international institutions, including some that are being brought together for the first time: the Intérieurs de Vence (Vence Interiors) series; the Jazz album; the monumental panels of La Gerbe (The Sheaf), Les Acanthes (Acanthuses); large figures in gouache cut-outs, including works such as La Tristesse du roi (Sorrows of the King). The exhibition route reflects continual transformation and offers an experience that takes visitors to the heart of the artist’s studio.
